Four days to go to 2014 Celtic Connections’ Opening Concert

The opening concert of the 2914 Celtic Connections festival is in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall at 7.30pm on 16th January.

This headlines violinist Nicola Benedetti, the subject of an articulate and compelling Desert Island Discs this morning, 12th January.

With Nicola Benedetti will be Julie Fowlis, Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, ‘unveiling material from her forthcoming Scottish-themed album’. Amongst other performers will be Duncan Chisholm – who was onstage with Wolfstone at the festival’s inaugural concert 20 years ag0 in January 1994. On Thursday night, Chisholm will be performing with Jarlath Henderson, Tony Byrne and Ali Hutton.

Today’s edition of The Herald on Sunday carried a free promotional CD for the festival – with Peter Mawanga and the Amaravi Movement , Sarah Jarosz, RANT, Capercaillie, Salsa Celtica and Elephant Revival, in a total of 16 tracks.

Dipping eclectically into the programme, there’s:

  • Far Far From Ypres: WW1 Scottish Songs: back in the Royal Concert Hall at 7.30pm on 17th January.
  • Mull Historical Society and Support: at The Arches, also at 7.30pm on 17th January
  • Treacherous Orchestra and Habadekuk: at The Old Fruitmarket at 9.00 on 17th January
  • Come and Try’: – a massive programme of hands on session with musical instruments starting on 18th January
  • Capercaillie’s 30th anniversary Concert: at the Royal Concert Hall at 7.30pm on 18th January
  • Tiree: Out of the Box: at the O2 ABC Glasgow at 7.30pm on 19th January
  • Peatbog Faeries and Budino: at the O2 ABC  Glasgow at 7.30pm on 23rd january
  • Skipinnish Night: at The Arches at 7.30pm on 24th january
  • Trampled by Turtles and Foghorn Stringband: at the O2 ABC Glasgow at 7.30pm on 25th january
  • New Voices: Lorne MacDougall: at the Mitchell Library at 1pm on 26th January
  • Stockton’s Wing with Blazin’ Fiddles: at The Od Fruitmarket at 8pm on 1st February
